You practise by actually using Chinese in chat, not by tapping through cards. The coach builds example sentences only from words you already know, plus the one it's teaching — so you are stretched but never lost — and it works all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Every word you practise joins a personal deck. The coach tracks how well you know each one — a mastery score from 0 to 5, kept per skill — when you last saw it, and when it is due again. A quick placement tells it where you start; the picture grows from there.
Reviews are scheduled so each word comes back just before you would forget it; the overdue ones come first. New words arrive in real-world frequency order, drawn from a large Chinese corpus, so your effort always lands on the words you will meet next.
